Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Slender trees 2–8 m tall with a lax crown.

Stems: Branches softly tomentose.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades deeply pinnatifid into 3–11 segments, these linear to oblong–lanceolate. Upper surfaces glabrous; lower surfaces densely brownish silky; blade coriaceous. Margins recurved. Petiolate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers paired, in terminal, erect, secund racemes 5–10 cm long, pedicels (4–)6–9(–10) mm long, tomentose, bracts minute. Flowers bisexual (perfect), protandrous. Calyx red, yellowish, nearly white, or occasionally greenish, splitting at first by a single slit, tomentose externally, glabrous within, the tube 13–20 mm long. Stamens 4; anthers ovate, sessile at base of limb (in the concave upper part of calyx), dithecal, opening by longitudinal slits. Ovary superior, sessile, 1-carpellate, densely villous, placentation along the margin of the carpel; ovules 2, anatropous, laterally attached near middle of cell; style 1, filiform, glabrous, ca. 2.5 cm long at anthesis, elongating up to 5 cm long during and after anthesis.

Fruit: Follicles obliquely ovoid; 1.5–2.5 cm long; densely villous; capped by persistent style. Seeds narrowly winged; compressed; endosperm absent.

Ploidy: 2n = 20

Habitat: Disturbed; dry to wet forest.

Elevation Range: 75–400 m.
